On 28 October, 2011, people interested in a design-based approach to creativity will meet at locations all over the globe.

Everyone is welcome - service designers, object designers, sustainability experts, professors, business people, teachers, hackers, makers, artists, students, kids, mums and grandpas – you will form teams and work together for 48 hours to create brand-new real-world ideas which can make that little difference.

Through the weekend, you’ll be linked to other jammers at other sites all over the globe, working in different ways on different answers to the same challenge, sharing problems, advice, and insights. And on Sunday at 5pm, you will publish your results to the world.

‘Design for Sustainable Behaviour' is een recente discipline binnen de ontwerpwetenschappen die zich focust op het gedrag van de gebruiker om tot duurzamere producten te komen. In tegenstelling tot wat de meeste mensen veronderstellen bevindt de grootste milieu-impact van heel wat producten zich in de gebruiksfase van het product, denk maar aan het elektriciteitverbruik en het gebruik van bijproducten (water, brandstof, detergenten, olie, filters…). Deze milieu impact wordt voor een groot deel beïnvloed door het gedrag van de gebruiker en hoe hij met het toestel omgaat.

Tijdens het Cisco Congres "Design your innovation" ga ik hier dieper op in en bekijken we hoe je hier als ingenieur of ontwerper kan op inspelen.

De Producttest is een berekeningsmodel van OVAM waarmee organisaties hun vorderingen en prestaties op vlak van milieuverantwoord productgebruik in kaart kunnen brengen. De Producttest geeft per productgroep tips en aanbevelingen bij de aankoop en het gebruik van het product. Daarnaast kan een organisatie een product beoordelen door een aantal vragen over het product te doorlopen. Zijn de vragen over het product beantwoord, dan toont de Producttest een grafiek, die de milieuprestaties van de beoordeelde producten weergeeft aan de hand van een relatieve milieuscore.

Momenteel bevat de Producttest de productgroepen kantoorartikelen, schoonmaakmiddelen en elektrische en elektronische apparaten.Tegen eind 2010 wordt de vierde productgroep verven en vernissen aan de Producttest toegevoegd.

De Producttest is ontwikkeld als instrument voor alle organisaties die wensen te werken rond milieuverantwoord productgebruik: aankoopdiensten van Departementen en Agentschappen, aankoopdiensten van gemeenten, provincies en OCMWs, milieuambtenaren en duurzaamheidsambtenaren, administratieve verantwoordelijke of MOS-verantwoordelijken in onderwijsinstellingen, verenigingen en bedrijven.

De aanbevelingen en gebruikstips voor de verschillende producten zijn toegankelijk voor iedereen. Een product beoordelen op milieuverantwoordheid is enkel mogelijk door personen in het kader van een organisatie of een vereniging. Particulieren of studenten die bijkomende informatie wensen over milieuverantwoorde producten kunnen hun vragen stellen via afvalpreventie@ovam.be.

What makes something “sustainable” or not? It’s a concern shared by designers around the world. Without data to back claims, sustainability is only opinion.

The Product Nutrition Label is a way of applying Life Cycle Assessment to materials. It provides a framework for comparing different areas of environmental effectiveness:
Systems, Contents, Social Responsibility, Chemical Health, Water, Energy, Carbon.
In addition, any third party verifications are included. The label also accounts for a qualitative summary of the product/material, and manufacturers can list sustainable attributes and share their environmental agenda.

Following a recent project, funded by the Danish EPA, a free set of teaching material towards ecodesign implementation is available.

The material has been designed to give a very simple insight for the practitioner, or the student, regarding how to begin to think environmental issues into the product development process.

The material, which consists of a handbook, teaching templates (ppt) and latge-scale posters (pdf), is currently available in English and Danish. Croatian and Japanese versions are on their way soon.

BASF’s “Ecovio Eco-Efficiency Compass” quickly assesses sustainability of bioplastics

BASF (Germany; www.basf.com) has developed an online software tool to evaluate the potential ecological benefits that can be achieved from using biodegradable plastics.

The software brings together in a single interface relevant data that has been gathered through many eco-efficiency analyses, for the production and disposal of selected products. Parameters that are used in the ecological evaluation of a given product then can be quickly checked, assessing their impact on the product’s eco-efficiency. The comparison of the ecological benefits of various approaches helps the user decide whether a biodegradable plastic is actually more environmentally friendly. However, biodegradable plastics do not automatically solve environmental problems simply because they can be composted, as their use only makes sense if they are more sustainable than non-biodegradable materials in the same role.

At present, the software is tailored to estimating the eco-efficiency of shopping bags and foam trays. Other product groups, however, can be added. Major developments on the market can be incorporated, for example polyethylene made of bio-ethanol.

BASF will be demonstrating its Ecovio Eco-Efficiency Compass at “K 2010” (www.k-online.de) in Düsseldorf / Germany in late October.

De POM West-Vlaanderen organiseert op 31 maart 2010 in samenwerking met 'Duurzaam is gewoon doen!' een ontmoetingsnamiddag voor bedrijven waarbij contacten centraal staan. Op de beurs maakt u kennis met 20 verschillende standhouders die concrete tools rond duurzaam ondernemen in de kijker plaatsen. Om 16u kan u 3 workshops rond strategisch management voor duurzaam ondernemen meevolgen.

Aansluitend volgt de ondertekening van het West-Vlaams Charter Duurzaam Ondernemen, waarbij 10 nieuwe bedrijven zich engageren om gestructureerd verschillende acties rond duurzaam ondernemen te realiseren. Deze bedrijven sluiten zich aan bij 78 bedrijven die sinds 2008 het Charter ondertekenden. Tijdens deze ondertekening getuigen enkele bedrijven over hun geplande acties. The publication of the Guidelines for Social Life Cycle Assessment produced by the UNEP/SETAC Life Cycle Initiative sets a milestone by outlining a framework and best-practices for assessing the social and socio-economic impacts of product life cycles. The guidelines also highlight where new research is needed.

Behind the life cycle of a product, there is a story to tell.
Not only about its potential impact on the environment, but as well in terms of social and socio-economic impacts - or potential impacts - of its production and consumption on the workers, the local communities, the consumers, the society and all value chain actors. Today’s value chains are often complex, global and because of it, faceless. Shedding light on the human relationships impacted by the life cycle of goods and services helps to re-establish the connection and identify ways in which social conditions can be improved.

These Guidelines present the Social and socio-economic Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA), a technique to assess and report about these impacts and benefits of product life cycle from the extraction of the natural resources to the final disposal. It provides an adequate technical framework from which a larger group of stakeholders can engage to move towards social responsibility when assessing the life cycle of goods and services.

The ELCD database II is now online at http://lca.jrc.ec.europa.eu/lcainfohub/datasetArea.vm

The ELCD II database comprises over 300 Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) data sets of key materials, energy carriers, and transport and waste treatment services of European market scope. The database includes a range of official data sets from the industry associations that are members of the European Business Advisory Group. Some yet missing data will be added subsequently in the coming months. All data sets can be used free of charge.

The data sets are provided in the recently finished International Reference Life Cycle Data System (ILCD) format and a number of LCA software developers have announced to implement import/export interfaces; please contact your software provider for more information.

The future work on the ELCD II DB foresees to further improve the method harmonization of the data inline with the upcoming ILCD Handbook.

Green is the new black, but looking beyond the hype of sustainability, we are still far from solving our two biggest problems, Climate Change and Peak Oil. The urgency, complexity and shared responsibility concerning sustainability are becoming increasingly clear, hand-in-hand with the business benefits of going green. Companies are looking for new niches and ways of thinking, but how can designers integrate sustainable thinking into their business practices?

Interaction design can be leveraged in addressing environmental sustainability issues. Sustainable interaction design is an emerging field that positions the user as the central player in sustainable systems. New research shows how sustainability and sustainable behavior can be embedded and supported within the context of the home and workplace in the short and long terms.

Technology holds both positive and negative implications towards a sustainable future. Technology affords the possibility to design intelligent, context-aware and interconnected products beyond physical products that can adapt to user behaviors and desires over time. Interaction designers can address sustainability and sustainable behavior from a user centered perspective, from the starting point of users situated within the context of their daily lives.

On October 28th, 2009, TUDelft invite you to attend the international symposium on sustainable interaction design, featuring four guest lectures and the inaugural lecture of Professor David Keyson. These perspectives from cutting edge research provide diverse examples of how interaction design can positively affect value changes and social norms on the issue of environmental sustainability from both bottom-up and top-down perspectives. There is a way forward, and we take empowering ideas and examples on how to proceed in the face of such complexity.

Het spel is een realisatie van de Hogeschool-Universiteit Brussel (HUB), in samenwerking met het Centrum Informatieve Spelen (C.I.S.) en het Ondernemersplatform VKW.

Vlaams minister van Sociale Economie Kathleen Van Brempt heeft maandag 31 maart 2009 de laureaten en winnaar van de wedstrijd ‘Ontdek het eeuwige leven - Grenzeloos Gebruik' bekendgemaakt.
Met de wedstrijd wou Van Brempt Vlaamse bedrijven, organisaties en studenten productontwikkeling aanzetten om aan de slag te gaan met de principes van Cradle to Cradle.

John R. Ehrenfeld is currently Executive Director of the International Society for Industrial Ecology. In 2000, he retired as the Director of the MIT Program on Technology, Business, and Environment. He continues to research and write about sustainability and culture change. He currently serves on the Council of the Society for Organizational Learning. In October 1999, the World Resources Institute honored him with a lifetime achievement award. He holds a B. S. and Sc. D. in Chemical Engineering from MIT, and is author or co-author of over 200 papers and other publications.

Op 13 januari 2009 heeft de OVAM de Ecodesign Awards PRO ’08 voor professionele ontwerpers uitgereikt.

De OVAM Ecodesign Award PRO 08 voor producten op de markt gaat naar Wave, een signalisatieverlichting voor parkeergarages, ontworpen door Fosfor.

In deze signalisatieverlichting voor parkeergarages werd ecodesign sterk en doordacht toegepast: innovatieve verlichtingstechniek (LED in combinatie met ‘Elit’acrylaat plaat) die slechts 1/7de verbruikt van een traditioneel systeem, doordacht materiaalgebruik (aluminium en PMMA/PET/PP plaat), integratie van functies, een scharnier dat kantelt bij aanrijding zodat het signalisatiebord niet stukgaat, modulair opgebouwd, snelle demontage wat de recyclage bevordert. Een pluspunt is ook dat deze signalisatieverlichting lokaal in België kan geproduceerd worden.

Twee producten kregen van de jury het Ecodesign Award PRO Label 08 voor categorie product op de markt:
- Ecover Refill, ontworpen door Pars Pro Toto
- Basic 3, ontworpen door Bart Baccarne

De OVAM Ecodesign Award PRO 08 voor producten niet op de markt gaat naar de zitbank Canvas, ontworpen door Cides.

Canvas overtuigt door het speelse ontwerp van de zitbank. Het is een buitenmeubel met een extra functie; de zitbank kan in diverse vormen geplaatst worden door de banken 360°, 180° of 90° te draaien. Recyclage van kunststof is niet nieuw, maar bij Canvas komen de eigenschappen die het gerecycleerde materiaal heeft, naar boven. Het meubel bewijst dat gerecycleerde kunststof een volwaardig materiaal is om toe te passen in een ontwerp.

Alle bekroonde inzendingen staan nog tot 21 februari in de tentoonstelling in het hart van de Vlaamse overheid, de Lokettenzaal van het Vlaamse Parlement

Voor het derde jaar op rij start de OVAM het Eco-efficiëntiescanprogramma.
Deze scan brengt de verbeterkansen inzake eco-efficiëntie (afval, energie, transport, management,...) voor het deelnemend bedrijf in kaart. De uiteindelijk voorgestelde maatregelen resulteren meestal niet enkel in winst voor het milieu, maar ook in financiële besparingen.

Ook dit jaar kunnen 330 kmo's een volledig gratis eco-efficiëntiescan aanvragen.

Eindelijk! Productnormen voor composteerbare en biologisch afbreekbare materialen

Op 24 oktober publiceerde het Belgisch Staatsblad een nieuw Koninklijk Besluit dat de productnormen voor composteerbare en biologisch afbreekbare materialen vastlegt. Hiermee heeft het land, als eerste in de EU, een regelgeving en vooral definities van wat de vaak gebruikte begrippen "composteerbaarheid", "thuiscompostering" en "biodegradeerbaar" nu in feite inhouden.

Het zal u de laatste jaren zeker zijn opgevallen dat er steeds meer materialen op de markt komen die claimen "composteerbaar" of "biologisch afbreekbaar" te zijn. Om te bepalen of dat inderdaad zo is, bestonden er tot nu toe helaas geen specifieke criteria. Het nieuwe Koninklijk Besluit van 9 september 2008 bepaalt nu haarfijn wanneer materialen recht hebben op de benaming "thuis composteerbaar", "composteerbaar" of "biologisch afbreekbaar". Enkel producten die aan deze criteria voldoen mogen dit vermelden. Voor verpakkingen is de reglementering strenger. Van geen enkele verpakking mag nog beweerd worden dat ze biologisch afbreekbaar is.
In juli 2009 wordt het besluit van toepassing.

Pantopicon, BECO, HOWEST departement PIH en Smidesign hebben de handen in elkaar geslagen voor de ontwikkeling van een Business Game rond Duurzame Product Innovatie (DPI.). De Raad van Bestuur van Flanders InShape heeft op 7 november 2008 een positieve beslissing genomen om het project te steunen in het kader van de 2de oproep 2008 “Vraaggedreven Onderzoek”.

Bedoeling is om Vlaamse bedrijven aan de hand van een spelvorm op een creatieve, inspirerende manier ervaring te laten opdoen met duurzame product- en diensteninnovatie.
In het beoogde spel zullen de 3 peilers van duurzame productontwikkeling (People, Planet, Profit) integraal benaderd worden.

Het spel zou de rode draad zijn om in een workshop voor een bedrijf, met een multidisciplinair samengesteld team, creatief te brainstormen rond “win-win-win” “people-planet-profit” nieuwe producten en diensten.
Onderdeel van het project is om in de loop van 2009 binnen een aantal Vlaamse bedrijven via een workshop van een dag het spel onder begeleiding te spelen. Op deze manier krijgt een team, samengesteld uit diverse afdelingen binnen het bedrijf, de kans om samen te leren hoe duurzaamheidsaspecten een plek te geven in de eigen product- en diensteninnovatie alsook stapsgewijs eerste ideeën te schetsen voor nieuwe toekomstgerichte, duurzame producten/diensten.

Doelgroep van het spel zijn innovatieadviseurs, adviseurs in de branche van milieu-, sociale economie, ontwerpbureaus die dergelijke workshops als een dienst aanbieden aan hun klanten, productontwikkelaars in bedrijven die met productinnovatie bezig zijn en zich hebben geëngageerd tot DPI.

Voor dit project zijn we nog op zoek naar mensen die mee in het project willen stappen als

- Onderzoeksmedewerker (openstaande vacature binnen de opleiding Master Industrieel Ontwerpen)

ENERGIE OPWEKKENDE DANSVLOER
De verplaatsbare vloer van circa 30 vierkante meter zet de beweging van dansende mensen om in elektriciteit die wordt gebruikt om de vloer op te lichten. De vloer bestaat uit modules van 65 x 65 cm die een kleine verticale beweging maken van maximaal 1 cm als je er op danst. Deze beweging wordt via geavanceerde mechatronica omgezet in elektrische stroom.
De energiemeter motiveert je om het maximum haalbare energielevel te bereiken. Deze intelligente vloer maakt gebruik van LED verlichting en gerecycled materiaal. Iedere danser, afhankelijk van het gewicht en de hoeveelheid energie van de dans, produceert een vermogen van 2 tot 20 Watt. De energie wordt nu gebruikt om de vloer op een interactieve manier te laten werken. Er wordt een manier gezocht zodat de output van de vloer in de toekomst ook andere systemen van elektriciteit kan voorzien.

PEE-EXPERIENCE
Wanneer je de (spaar)knop van de transparante stortbak van het toilet indrukt, zie je het gezuiverde regenwater dat eerder op het dak is opgevangen (hemelwatersysteem) voor de transparante waterleidingen aan het plafond stromen.
Alle urinoirs op het herentoilet zijn waterloos. Hiermee wordt op jaarbasis bijna 1.000 m3 water bespaard.

Ontwerpen voor duurzaamheid met BNO en O2 Nederland

Tijdens de Dutch Design Week 2008 organiseren BNO en O2 Nederland een uitgebreid programma rond duurzaamheid en ontwerpen.
BNO heeft de handen ineen geslagen met O2 Nederland (vereniging en netwerk van ontwerpers, wetenschappers en adviseurs gericht op duurzaamheid) met het doel om een actief netwerk te vormen en ontwerpers gedegen voorlichting te geven over duurzaamheid. De start van de samenwerking is een uitgebreid programma tijdens de Dutch Design Week 2008 http://www.dutchdesignweek.nl/

Woensdag 22 oktober: BNO & O2 Nederland Info- en netwerkstand
Tijdens het symposium DDD Duurzaam Innoveren , over duurzaamheid, C2C en Ecodesign, zijn BNO en O2 Nederland aanwezig met een informatie & netwerkstand op Strijp S. Hier hoor je alles over beide organisaties, kom je in contact met ontwerpers met ervaring op het gebied van duurzaamheid en hoor je het laatste nieuws over cursussen, lezingen en netwerk meetings.

Donderdag 23 oktober: Ontwerpen voor duurzaamheid - lezingen en workshops
O2 en BNO zijn te gast bij De Bloeiende Stad met een serie workshops en lezingen die een uitgebreide en inspirerende introductie bieden tot duurzaam ontwerpen. Aan bod komen onder andere gebruikssystemen, het sturen van gebruiksgedrag, het verbreden van je rol als ontwerper richting adviseur en het ontwerpen vanuit materiaal-eigenschappen.
